We’re looking for a Chief Examiner, Lead Assessment Writer and Lead Examiner to support the delivery of our A-level Design and Technology: Product Design specification. These roles are essential in delivering assessments and marking that meet the needs of both students and teachers.

These roles can be worked flexibly and are designed to be carried out alongside full time teaching commitments.

Chief Examiner

What you’ll do

You’ll oversee the development of question papers and mark schemes, ensuring they are of the highest quality and provide fair, reliable assessment. Leading a team of approximately 4 associates, you’ll guide the review and refinement of assessment materials, balancing deadlines with the need for consistent standards.

Beyond paper production, you’ll play a key role in supporting and influencing the quality of marking, helping to resolve escalations and ensuring robust processes are in place. Your work will be essential in delivering assessments that meet the needs of both students and teachers.

The majority of the workload will fall between September and December.

What we are looking for

  • Expertise in A-level Design & Technology: Product Design and an in-depth knowledge of assessment and curriculum requirements.

Lead Assessment Writer

What you’ll do

You’ll play a key role in the question paper production process by creating high quality question papers and mark schemes which reflect the requirements set out in a brief.

The majority of the workload will fall between September and December.

What we are looking for

  1. Current or recent teaching experience (within the last 2 years), with excellent knowledge of A-level Design and Technology: Product Design.
  2. Consistent in meeting deadlines and delivering work to a strict schedule.
  3. Open to receiving and incorporating constructive feedback.
  4. Good IT skills - much of the role is computer based.

Lead Examiner

What you’ll do

You’ll play a key role in the exam delivery for the specification. You will lead and support a team of examiners, while working with the Chief Examiner and other Senior Associates to set the standard, reviewing evidence at the awarding committee and using this evidence to determine grade boundaries. You will also undertake a post-results review of marking and support AQA with further post results work if required.

The majority of the workload will fall between June and August.

What we are looking for

  1. Thorough knowledge and understanding of mark schemes and the examination process.
  2. Current or recent experience of teaching or examining AQA A-level Design & Technology: Product Design (previous 2 years).
  3. Ability to monitor, mentor and provide feedback to a team.
  4. Proactive working style and the ability to lead a team in a fast-paced environment.
  5. Consistent in meeting deadlines and delivering work to a strict schedule.
  6. IT Skills - Ability to familiarise with bespoke systems.

Lead Assessment Writer

What you’ll do

You’ll play a key role in the question paper production process by creating high quality question papers and mark schemes which reflect the requirements set out in a brief.

There is a requirement to attend meetings which are scheduled on weekdays and held virtually via Microsoft Teams.

The majority of the workload will fall between September and December.

What we are looking for

  1. current or recent teaching experience (within the last 3 years), with excellent knowledge of GCSE Polish and a good command of English
  2. a degree in this subject or related field
  3. experience of writing questions and a comprehension of what makes a good question paper and mark scheme
  4. consistent in meeting deadlines and delivering work to a strict schedule.
  5. open to receiving and incorporating constructive feedback
  6. able to manage the workload of Item Writers if needed and provide constructive feedback to colleagues
  7. good IT skills - much of the role is computer-based.

Item Writer

What you’ll do

You’ll be responsible for creating items and appropriate supporting marking instructions, then act on constructive feedback from other members of the team. An “item” is the term we use for a question or task and the accompanying mark scheme. To write an item you need to be able to produce all of these elements in accordance with specific commissioning guidance.

The majority of the workload will fall between September and December.

What we are looking for

  1. experience of teaching and marking GCSE Polish (within the last 3 years)
  2. a degree in this subject or related field
  3. experience of writing questions and a comprehension of what makes a good question paper and mark scheme
  4. receptive to feedback, consistently meeting deadlines and working within a collaborative environment
  5. the ability to work independently and write to a brief.
  6. good IT skills - much of the role is computer-based.

Scrutineer

What you’ll do

Scrutineers are responsible for testing draft assessments from the perspective of a student to ensure that the assessment is complete, valid and appropriate for students.

The nature of this annually contracted role allows you to continue with your full-time professional commitments. We believe it is important for the post holder to have teaching experience so that they can accurately reflect the ‘student voice’.

What we are looking for

  • current or recent teaching experience of GCSE Polish
  • candidates with excellent subject and specification knowledge
  • ability to empathise with students sitting exams and how they interpret assessments
  • awareness/knowledge of the marking process
  • excellent communication skills with an ability to articulate clear, honest and appropriate feedback
  • background of critiquing work and suggesting amendments constructively.

Are you a current or retired A-level Science teacher who is passionate about encouraging, sharing and building expertise in practical science teaching?

We are working in partnership with other awarding organisations to observe and review practical science work. As a Science Practical Adviser, you will visit ten schools over a two-week period to review and produce a report on how practical work is performed. For each visit and report you will receive a fee of £203.00 plus expenses.

This opportunity will suit those who enjoy practical science teaching and are comfortable with report writing. If you are currently a full-time teacher you will need the support of your Head Teacher to ensure you are able to take the time out from school to perform this work, and we will provide teacher release vouchers to cover your absence.

To succeed in this role, you will

  • Be a qualified teacher with knowledge of at least one of the current A-level Science specifications (from any exam board).
  • Have relevant middle leadership experience (e.g. Head of subject or TLR holder).
  • Be able to travel to centres in your region.
  • Be passionate about your subject and practical science teaching.
  • Be confident in providing verbal feedback following observations.
  • Have the ability to write constructive and informative reports.
  • Have exceptional written communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Possess great interpersonal and organisational skills.

We are holding a candidate assessment day on Saturday 20 September. Please note that you will need to be available on this date. Expenses will be paid to cover the cost of travel to the venue.

Monitoring will take place through the academic autumn and spring terms so you will need to be fully available during this period. If you are currently a full-time teacher, monitoring visits will take place over two separate continuous weeks or two-week block periods and we will try and accommodate preferred weeks, although this is not always possible.

Component 1: Philosophy of religion and ethics

Component 2: Study of religion and dialogues

This is a contractual role; you’ll be paid between £78.72 to £99.57 per paper for your work. The role can be carried out entirely from home and there is no travel or meeting attendance required.

What you’ll do
You’ll test draft assessments from the perspective of a student to ensure that the assessments are complete, valid and appropriate. You will sit the question paper under exam conditions and provide written feedback to the assessment team.

What we’re looking for

  • Knowledge and understanding of the relevant subject content and familiarity with the specification.
  • Ability to empathise with students and understand how they respond to assessments.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate clear, honest and appropriate feedback.
  • Delivery to strict deadlines and work well on time sensitive tasks.
  • Good IT skills - some of the role will require the use of IT systems.

Paper production

For some specifications, whole papers are planned, drafted, agreed and managed from beginning to end.

Exam delivery

Our exams and non-exam assessments (NEA) are marked by 30,000 examiners and moderators. Progress and quality is monitored by groups of associates, starting with standardisation and regular checking of marking through to awarding – where grade boundaries are set and applied to each student’s mark.
